Artist Statement

My previous work includes choreography, dance performance, front-of-house operations, and costume crafting and maintenance. I strongly believe in the educational opportunities within the performing arts, meaning that all artists can and should take time to appreciate all that goes into a production. My background in dance struck a fascination with the costumes that enhanced each of my performances. This desire led me to work in costume construction during my early years as a collegiate student, thus gaining an appreciation for another aspect of production. These experiences and opportunities have provided me with exposure to new and familiar areas within the performing arts world.

I view my work as a piece of myself. I bring something to each role I am fulfilling, thus contributing to something greater than myself. I strongly believe in collaboration, as mere ideas can grow into full scale productions with the assets people bring with them. When I am making art, most often when I am choreographing movement, I leave room for other artists to give their interpretations to find the way they connect best with the piece. I believe that people have experiences that may not be the same, but share commonalities that teach similar lessons which helps to connect their emotions to art.

I strongly believe art is a reflection of what we as a society can do to make a positive impact on ourselves, the people around us, and our world. As a person who desires to bring a spotlight to those around her, I want to ensure that the platform I have is used properly and aids those who have not had a voice in the past. I believe that art should be re-envisioned and discussed every so often to ensure the messages are clear and accessible for audiences and artists. Once this is done, art will continue to thrive and be an outlet that many more can access and use to inspire the world around them.
